Unleavened Bread Recipe

Unleavened bread is very easy to make and require only 3 basic ingredients. It is undoubtedly delicious when served warm with butter and tastes perfect with hummus.

Bread has been a comfort food for many years. This unleavened bread is made without any rising agents such as yeast or baking powder to make a flat bread. This unleavened or flat bread is of great symbolic importance in church and Jewish culture. In Jewish community, matzo is a very popular unleavened bread during the Passover. There are many varieties of unleavened breads such as chapatti, pita, tortillas, phulka, crepes and few more.

With only few basic ingredients you can make this super easy unleavened bread at home. With minimal effort and under half an hour you will be able to make some bread for yourself to enjoy for dinner.

There are some variations in the recipe of unleavened bread. Basically you need flour, water and some salt.  Flour and salt are combined together and then water is poured. This mixture is knead, preferably with hands until dough is formed. This dough is then divided into small balls of equal size and flattened with a rolling pin into your desired shape. These are then baked in oven and served warm.

Preparation time: 5 minutes       Cook time: 15 minutes       Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup lukewarm water

Instructions:

  • Mix flour and salt in a bowl so both combine well. Now pour water and knead for about 3 minutes until smooth and elastic dough is formed. Add some flour if you feel the dough is too sticky.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Place the dough on a floured surface and divide it into balls of equal size then press each ball into discs with a rolling pin.
  • Take a fork and prick the discs and place on baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15 minutes. Serve warm with butter.
