Real Popcorn

Indulge in the true pleasure of popcorn with this simple yet incredibly satisfying recipe for real popcorn. Say goodbye to the convenience of microwave popcorn and embrace the authentic flavors and textures that only the real thing can offer. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a bowl of freshly popped corn that can be customized with real butter, cheese, or any other seasoning of your choice.

Preparation Time: About 10 minutes

Servings: 4 to 6

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil, such as grapeseed or corn
  • 1/2 cup popping corn
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or extra virgin olive oil (optional)
  • Salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a large, deep saucepan with a lid (around 6 quarts), heat the neutral oil over medium heat.
  2. Add 3 kernels of corn to the saucepan and cover it with the lid.
  3. Once the 3 kernels pop, remove the lid and add the remaining popping corn. Cover the saucepan again.
  4. Shake the saucepan while holding the lid on, allowing the corn to pop evenly. Occasionally shake the pot to prevent burning.
  5. Cook until the popping sound stops, which typically takes about 5 minutes.
  6. Optional: If using butter, melt it in a separate container or gently warm the extra virgin olive oil.
  7. Transfer the popped corn into a large bowl. Drizzle it with the melted butter or warmed olive oil and sprinkle with salt while tossing the popcorn to evenly distribute the flavors.
  8. For the best taste experience, serve the popcorn immediately while it’s still hot and crispy.

VARIATIONS:

  1. Salty-Sweet Popcorn: Enjoy a combination of flavors by sprinkling the hot popcorn with both salt and superfine sugar immediately after it’s done popping. Toss the popcorn to ensure an even coating, and adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences.
  2. Parmesan Popcorn: Grate 1/4 cup of finely grated Parmesan cheese and toss it with the hot popcorn. The delicate, nutty flavor of Parmesan adds a delightful twist to this classic snack.

9 FLAVOR BOOSTERS FOR POPCORN:

Just toss any of these thoroughly into the cooked popcorn or nuts. Some are more potent than others, so be

  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Chili powder
  • Chaat masala
  • Five-spice powder
  • Ground sumac
  • Cayenne or hot red pepper flakes

Enjoy your homemade real popcorn, savoring the aroma, crunch, and flavors that make it so irresistible. Whether you choose to keep it simple with butter and salt or explore the delicious variations, this snack is perfect for movie nights, gatherings, or anytime you crave a satisfying treat.
