Grilled or Broiled Tofu

Grilled or broiled tofu is a fantastic way to transform this versatile ingredient into a delicious and satisfying dish. Freezing or pressing the tofu beforehand helps to achieve a firmer texture, making it perfect for grilling or broiling. Whether you’re using a grill or broiler, the process is straightforward and yields delectable results. This tofu preparation can be served on its own or used as a flavorful addition to various dishes, such as stir-fries.

MAKES: 4 to 6 servings

TIME: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds any tofu, frozen, squeezed, or patted dry, cut in half horizontally
  • Salt
  • Soy sauce
  • Mirin (or honey mixed with water) optional

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Heat a charcoal or gas grill to moderately high heat or set the broiler and place the rack about 4 inches from the heat source. Lightly sprinkle the tofu with salt.
  2. Cut the tofu into large cubes and thread them onto skewers or place the whole pieces directly on the grill or under the broiler.
  3. Carefully cook the tofu until it becomes lightly browned. Then, brush it with soy sauce or a mixture of soy sauce and mirin for added flavor. Continue grilling or broiling until the tofu is beautifully browned, which should take less than 10 minutes in total.
  4. Serve the grilled or broiled tofu immediately, either whole or sliced. Drizzle a little more soy sauce on top or pair it with any of the sauces. Alternatively, let it cool, wrap it up, and store it in the refrigerator for use in other dishes.

VARIATIONS:

  • Miso Grilled or Broiled Tofu: Warm 1/2 cup of red miso with 2 tablespoons of sake or white wine and 2 tablespoons of mirin (or 1 tablespoon of honey mixed with 1 tablespoon of water). Brush the tofu liberally with this miso mixture in Step 2 and continue cooking, turning and basting, until the tofu reaches a dark brown color. Serve immediately.
  • Barbecue-, Teriyaki-, or Ponzu-Glazed Tofu: In Step 2, brush the tofu generously with any barbecue sauce, Teriyaki Sauce , or Ponzu Sauce . Continue cooking, turning and basting, until the tofu achieves a nice browning.

Serve the grilled or broiled tofu immediately, either whole or sliced. Drizzle a little more soy sauce on top or pair it with any of the sauces. The tofu’s enticing aroma and rich, smoky flavor make it a delightful centerpiece for any meal. Alternatively, let it cool, wrap it up, and store it in the refrigerator for use in other dishes. With its versatile nature, this grilled or broiled tofu is a fantastic addition to stir-fries, salads, sandwiches, and more. Enjoy the deliciousness of this flavorful tofu preparation and savor the endless possibilities it offers in your culinary creations!
