Apple Rollups

These delightful apple rollups are a fantastic choice for both kids and adults. With their simplicity and wholesome ingredients, they make for a super easy, vegetarian snack or a quick lunch option. The combination of Colby Jack cheese and chopped apple wrapped in thin whole wheat bread creates a delightful flavor profile. Enjoy the convenience and deliciousness of these rollups, perfect for those on-the-go moments.

Yield: 8 rollups

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 4–5 minutes

Total Time: 14–15 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 slices whole wheat sandwich bread
  • 4 ounces Colby Jack cheese, grated
  • ½ small apple, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Prepare the Bread: Begin by removing the crusts from the whole wheat sandwich bread. Use a rolling pin to flatten the bread slices, applying firm pressure to make them very thin. This will ensure that your rollups are easy to handle and will cook evenly.
  2. Layer Ingredients: Lay out the flattened bread slices and distribute the grated Colby Jack cheese and chopped apple evenly among them.
  3. Roll and Secure: Roll up each bread slice tightly, enclosing the cheese and apple fillings. Use one or two toothpicks to secure each rollup, preventing them from unraveling during cooking.
  4. Brush with Butter: Brush the outside of each roll with the melted butter. This will enhance the flavor and help the rollups crisp up during cooking.
  5. Cooking Process: Place the rollups in the air fryer basket and set the temperature to 390°F (200°C). Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the outside of the rollups becomes crisp and beautifully browned.

TIP:

  • If you hate wasting food, save the discarded bread crusts by freezing them. They can be later used for stuffing or homemade breadcrumbs, adding value to your cooking.

VARIATION:

  • For a twist on the classic recipe, consider using finely diced ham instead of apple. You’ll need about 3 tablespoons of cubed ham for 8 rollups. You can also combine apple and ham together for a delicious combination, just be cautious not to overfill the bread slices, making it difficult to roll them easily.

Indulge in the flavors of these Apple Rollups that offer a delightful blend of sweetness and cheesiness. Whether enjoyed as a quick snack or a light lunch, these rollups are sure to please both young and adult palates. With a burst of flavors and a convenient air fryer cooking method, these rollups are a go-to choice for busy days.
