Traditional Cranberry Sauce

Traditional Cranberry Sauce is a classic accompaniment to holiday meals and a versatile condiment that adds a tangy and sweet flavor to a variety of dishes. Made with fresh or frozen cranberries and sugar, this sauce is a staple on Thanksgiving and Christmas tables. It has a vibrant red color and a slightly tart taste that balances well with savory dishes.

MAKES: About 1 quart

TIME: 20 minutes, plus time to chill

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups (about 1 pound) fresh cranberries, picked over and rinsed, or frozen cranberries

  2. Cover the saucepan and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries are broken down, for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Transfer the cranberry mixture to a bowl and let it cool. Then, refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. The cranberry sauce can be covered and refrigerated for up to a week.

  5. Allow the jelly to cool, then refrigerate until firm. Slice to serve.

USES:

Here are some uses for Traditional Cranberry Sauce:

  • Holiday Roasts: Serve cranberry sauce alongside roasted turkey, chicken, or pork. Its bright flavor cuts through the richness of the meat, adding a burst of freshness to each bite.
  • Sandwiches: Spread cranberry sauce on sandwiches, particularly those with roasted turkey or leftover Thanksgiving turkey. It adds a zingy and fruity element that complements the savory fillings.
  • Cheese Platters: Pair cranberry sauce with a selection of cheeses on a cheese platter. The sauce’s tartness provides a refreshing contrast to the rich and creamy flavors of the cheese.
  • Yogurt Parfaits: Layer cranberry sauce with yogurt and granola for a delightful breakfast or snack. The sauce adds a burst of flavor and a touch of sweetness to the creamy yogurt.
  • Desserts: Use cranberry sauce as a topping for desserts like cheesecakes, ice cream, or pound cake. Its vibrant color and tangy taste create a beautiful and flavorful contrast.
  • Salad Dressing: Incorporate cranberry sauce into homemade salad dressings. Combine it with vinegar, olive oil, and seasonings for a unique and fruity vinaigrette.
  • Breakfast Dishes: Dollop cranberry sauce on pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal for a breakfast treat. The sauce adds a burst of flavor and a touch of tartness to the morning meal.

Remember, Traditional Cranberry Sauce can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to a week, allowing you to enjoy its tangy goodness throughout the holiday season.

NOTE:

  • If you prefer a less sweet cranberry sauce, you can reduce the amount of sugar used, but keep in mind that it may result in a runnier sauce. If you’re looking for a less sweet option, you may consider making Cranberry Relish with Orange and Ginger
