Sushi Rolls (Maki Sushi)

Sushi rolls, known as Maki Sushi, are a beloved and iconic dish in Japanese cuisine. These delectable rolls consist of nori (seaweed) sheets, sushi rice, and a variety of fillings, all tightly rolled together and sliced into bite-sized pieces. Making sushi rolls at home allows you to explore endless flavor combinations and create personalized rolls to suit your taste preferences.

MAKES: 6 rolls

TIME: 40 minutes with prepared rice and filling

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 square sheets nori (seaweed)
  • 2 tablespoons rice or other mild vinegar
  • 1 recipe Sushi Rice (about 4 cups)
  • Wasabi paste as needed
  • 1 cup filling
  • Pickled Ginger
  • Soy sauce (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Begin by toasting the nori sheets to enhance their flavor and texture. Hold each sheet with tongs and pass it over a medium-high flame for a few seconds until it changes color. For electric stoves, run the sheets under the broiler for 15 seconds to a minute on each side. Mix 1 cup of water with the vinegar in a bowl, creating “hand water” for wetting your hands as you work.
  2. Place a square of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi rolling mat. Use your hands to evenly spread a 1/2-inch layer of sushi rice on the nori, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides. Rinse your hands in the hand water as needed. You can start with a slightly thinner layer of rice if you are new to rolling sushi.
  3. Smear the rice with a small amount of wasabi paste (be cautious, as it can be spicy). Add your chosen filling, making sure not to overstuff the roll. Thinly sliced or julienned fillings work best.
  4. Using the bamboo mat, tightly roll the nori around the rice, forming it into a log. You can unroll the mat at any time to check the roll’s progress. Rolling may take a little practice, but it’s not difficult, and you’ll quickly get the hang of it. For rolling instructions, follow the illustrations provided.
  5. Once rolled, slice the sushi roll into 1-inch sections. Serve with pickled ginger and soy sauce if desired.
