Ravioli with Creamy Tomato Sauce

While store-bought ravioli and jarred pasta sauce offer convenience, they often lack the robust flavors we crave in a satisfying dinner. That’s why we’ve created a recipe that combines the ease of store-bought ravioli with a homemade tomato sauce bursting with flavor. By using diced tomatoes, chicken broth, and a touch of heavy cream, we’ve crafted a quick and delicious sauce that will elevate your weeknight supper. Cooking the ravioli directly in the sauce allows it to thicken quickly as the pasta releases its starch into the mixture. Chopped basil adds a fresh and herbal note to complete this dish. This recipe can be made with either two 9-ounce packages or one 20-ounce package of fresh cheese ravioli, but avoid using frozen ravioli. Adjust the sauce’s consistency by adding hot water if necessary. Get ready to enjoy a flavorful and effortless dinner with this delightful ravioli in tomato cream sauce recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 onion, chopped fine
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can of diced tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 18-20 ounces of fresh cheese ravioli
  • 1 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated (1/2 cup)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • Salt and pepper

PREPARATIONS:

  1. Melt the unsalted butter in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and golden brown, approximately 10 to 12 minutes.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the chicken broth, diced tomatoes, heavy cream, and fresh cheese ravioli to the Dutch oven. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook at a vigorous simmer, stirring often, until the ravioli is tender and the sauce has thickened, around 6 to 9 minutes.
  3. Remove the Dutch oven from the heat, and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Serve the ravioli in tomato cream sauce immediately.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  • If the sauce needs adjustment in terms of consistency, add hot water gradually, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired thickness is achieved.

TIPS:

  • Opt for fresh cheese ravioli for the best texture and taste.
  • To enhance the flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick.
  • Serve with a sprinkle of extra-grated Parmesan cheese and a garnish of fresh basil leaves for a finishing touch.

With this recipe, you can enjoy the convenience of store-bought ravioli without sacrificing flavor. The homemade tomato cream sauce, prepared with diced tomatoes, chicken broth, and a touch of heavy cream, adds richness and depth to the dish. Cooking the ravioli directly in the sauce allows it to absorb the flavors and thicken in record time.
