This is one of those Old World dishes that uses simple ingredients and produces a delicious outcome. If you are interested in Mediterranean foods, these kebabs might just be the dessert you’re looking for. We suggest using agave syrup and whipped coconut cream for a vegan alternative.
MAKES 4 TO 6 KEBABS
INGREDIENTS:
KEBABS
- 1½ pounds (680 g) fresh figs
- 4 to 6 skewers
- Oil
FOR SERVING
- 1 cup (240 g) mascarpone cheese
- 1⁄3 cup (115 g) good quality honey
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat the grill for medium-high heat. When the grill is ready, oil the grill grates right before putting on the kebabs. Using long-handled tongs, dip some folded paper towels in a high smoke point cooking oil and wipe down the grill grates, making at least three good passes to create a nonstick surface.
- Gently rinse off figs and dry with a clean kitchen cloth or paper towel. Cut each fig in half lengthwise. Carefully thread about 4 to 5 pieces onto each skewer. Lightly brush both sides of the figs with a neutral-flavored oil.
- Place the kebabs onto the grill, cut-side down. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Gently turn and grill for another 1 to 2 minutes.
- Once the figs are cooked to the desired doneness, promptly remove the kebabs from the grill and plate. Either serve on skewers or remove the figs and place into bowls with a spoonful of mascarpone cheese and a little honey.
TIP:
- You can use flavored honey in this dish if you’d like. Lavender honey is always a good choice.
