This easy recipe requires just a few ingredients and simple steps to create a delicious and satisfying soup. The star of this dish is the caramelized onions, which add a sweet and savory element to the broth. The soup is then topped with toasted French bread and a generous amount of melted Swiss cheese. The result is a hearty and flavorful soup that will warm you up on chilly days. So, let’s gather our ingredients and get started!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth
  • 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can beef consommé
  • 2 large onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 pressed garlic cloves
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices toasted French bread

SERVING YIELD:

  • This recipe serves approximately 4 people.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Sauté the Onions:
    • Place onions and butter in a saucepan.
    • Sauté the onions on medium heat until they become tender.
    • Add the pressed garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let the garlic burn.
  2. Add Broth and Consommé:
    • Pour in the beef broth, beef consommé, and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil for 1 minute, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  3. Prepare the Cheese Topping:
    • Preheat the broiler.
    • Take ovenproof bowls (oversized coffee mugs work well) and place 0.125 cup of Swiss cheese in the bottom of each bowl.
    • Fill each bowl with the prepared soup, leaving some room at the top.
  4. Toast the French Bread:
    • Place a slice of toasted French bread on top of each bowl.
    • Sprinkle 0.125 cup of Swiss cheese over the bread.
  5. Broil and Serve:
    • Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
    • Carefully remove the bowls from the broiler (be cautious, as they will be hot).
    • Serve the French onion soup immediately and enjoy!

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Preheat the broiler to ensure the cheese topping melts and browns properly.
  • Use ovenproof bowls or oversized coffee mugs to assemble and broil the soup.
  • Serve the French onion soup immediately after broiling for the best taste and texture.
